Limitation of service for Satellite Internet Providers

We want you to be happy with your Satellite Internet purchase. So to ensure that you are pleased with your HughesNet purchase, we would like to give you as much information prior to ordering.

With satellite Internet you will experience quicker download times over dial-up and wireless connections. A 2-way satellite system takes time to get data from your computer, up to a satellite in outer space, and back, this takes only a fraction of a second, and is called "latency". This 700milliseconds is extremely fast for browsing web pages , download files, opening emails, streaming videos... It's actually so fast it not even noticeable, but this fraction of a second delay in not ideal for all internet applications. Below is a list of some time-sensitive applications where this latency can be a problem.

  • Online multi-player first person shooter games like "Call of Duty"
  • You may see lag with Real-time collaboration/conferencing, such as NetMeeting or videoconferencing
  • Vonage or MagicJack... VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol)
  • Some tunnel VPNs, which send a lot of small packets back and forth, may also function slow.

Latency refers to the amount of time it takes a packet of data to travel across a network. With satellite service, that data must travel up to the satellite and back (about 45,000 miles). This round trip adds about a half a second delay to the total time your computer takes to communicate with a Website or host server

When you connect to the Internet using HughesNet, the upload and download speeds you experience will vary based on a variety of factors including the configuration of your computer, the number of concurrent users, network or Internet congestion, the speed of the Web sites you are accessing, and other factors. Stated speeds and uninterrupted use of service are not guaranteed. During peak hours, actual upload and download speeds will likely be lower than speeds indicated.
